You can start now..... Some have already dropped.... The snow lets you know where the deer have been traveling and can give you a good idea where to start looking..... __________________ ............................................

Many are of the opinion that it is best to wait until most of the antlers are cast to go shed hunting. The logic here is that you will have the greatest chance of finding bone on a given day. However, unless you have exclusive rights to an area, there will be competition. Many guys have trained their wives and even their dogs to help them look. If they find an antler this Saturday it is certain that you will not fine it during prime time in two weeks. Click on the above link and check out the "shed thread". There are some great shed hunting tips and some motivational photos. ![]() __________________ Helping deer go up the food chain since 1979.

I think it's safe to say you can start hunting for sheds now. Some bucks might still be hanging onto their antlers, but I believe more than 50% have dropped theirs by now. I say this because in and around where I live I constantly see bucks with antlers and I see them almost every afternoon on my way home from work. Over the last 2 weeks, I have seen lots and lots of deer as is normal, but only one of the 5 bucks I regularly see still has his antlers. I would guess the others have dropped. The one that still has his is a 6 pointer and they are bleached pretty white.
I have several bucks around because there is no hunting in my town but plenty of fields and some woods. I tend to get back into the woods each winter right around President's Day weekend as I have 3 days to hike and enjoy a nice cigar while getting some exercise in the woods. It's been about 2 years since I picked up a shed so I am due! Now is a good time because the ground is frozen solid so you won't be splashing thru puddles and mud. The ground is free from snow and the ground more or less brown so keep your eyes focused ahead and looking for tan/white structure. Good luck. |
