12/21/06 NJ Goose & Crow

Myself, Matty, and gretzky went goose hunting this morning at a secret location in north jersey.  Matty did not bring a gun or anything... he was just along to fart and crack jokes.

There were 50 milllion crows... well 50 million minus one... I whacked him.

We saw geese fly over us but nothing close enough (we want lethal range with steel load)... until we were getting ready to leave around 8:45 AM (I gotta get to work)... when we heard/saw three geese flying near by.  Well... I worked my call... and called them in.

Since I was busy with the call in hand... and remaining motionless... gretzky jumped up and whacked one.  Finally!  We've been trying several times since September.  They are harder than you think.

I hope the goose taste good.  I cut out the breasts... they look and weigh like two big steaks.  Who knows?  Oh... and the crow feathers are going to an Indian tribe that uses them for their outfits.

I had a freaking blast.  We laughed our asses off most of the time.  95% of the stuff that happened will not be posted.  So funny...

What's up with the Mon, Thur, Fri, and Sat?  Seems kind of odd to have select days, no?  Weird.

Are geese hard to get?  I see like flocks of 1000s down here in ponds and fields.

I think its either (or both) a federal thing... and/or a farmer thing.

Dude!  This morning was awesome!!!! Im glad we finally bagged a bird!

We saw no geese until 8:30, then the distant sky lit up with them!  Too bad only 3 flew over us and I could only get the one shot off.  As we left flock after flock was flying by.

Oh and the red dot scope on my 870 worked amazing for taking that shot.  There was no lining up a bead!  Just plopped the dot on the bird and the rest was history!

I think both crows and geese have good vision.  As soon as you move... the birds veer away.

I had a good time today guys. That was pretty fun. Not sure if I have any desire to actually shoot a goose, but just going and cracking jokes and laughing till i could barely breath was great!

Let me know the next time you go, I may tag along again, if you dont mind.

Im gonna have to have this ear to ear grin surgically removed!

Was it their great vision? Or how did you put it?  "Our camo makes us look like 3 giant pickles hiding in the corn"

Matty, you should practice your calling so these guys can both shoot if your just going to tag along.

Smoke the goose, make stew or pound it flat and make it like chicken parm. Or soak it in salted water and roast. If you just try to cook it the way it is you'll probably puke

I want to. I also offered to call today, but Kris said I couldnt slobber on his calls, mumbling something about watching me spit out nasty flem the entire time.

I'll have to pick up a few goose calls...

I tried throwing french fries at them and yelling: HERE GOOSEY GOOSEY GOOSEY, but they'd always veer off before they got in range.

Works at the mall!?

crows are considered semi=migratory and the federal government restricts the amount of days they can be hunted. If I remember right its in an agreement with Mexico and Canada. March thru August they are protected because of the young crows.

I see most recipes involve soaking the meat in salt water over night... I'll do that tonight.

Seeing geese and shooting a goose are a lot different. Most geese that you see are really out of your effective shotgun range. And because there are so few public spots to hunt up here in North Jersey, you may not find any geese that fly within shooting distance on the day you decide to goose hunt.

I have to take all the credit for guiding these two guys to their kills!

Yup...What can I say, never been goose hunting in my life, and I go and help make decisions for ONE day, and birds die. Doesnt get any more clear who the goose/crow expert is here!
