NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 4 / Took a Zone 4 Muzzy 4 pointer (pix)
Posted:  19 Dec 2006 10:30 PM   Last Edited By: Drop Tine
Went out for an evening hunt in zone 4 with the Muzzy today. I figured I would give it one more go before I packed away the Gun Season gear, plus I wanted to get a donation deer for a family I know that could use the meat. Around 4:00 I had a doe come thru a ravine I saw watching. I thought about taking her even though I don’t really like to take does this late in the season as most of them are more then likely pregnant, but anyway then I saw movement coming up behind her and I thought maybe it's a buck. It was the smallest deer I ever saw especially being this late in the year. There is no way I could take that deers mother away from it. So I definitly gave it a pass. As it got closer to 5;00 and I couldn’t see all that well anymore I was getting ready to call it a day when I hear the unmistakable sounds of a deer coming along side of me. I turn slowly to see a nice buck walking about 30 yards away with his head down. I settle the cross-hairs on him just behind his shoulder and BOOM he runs about 20 yards an looks back here he saw just standing so as fast as I can reload the deer is in no hurry just standing there  then starts to walk away on an angle I get the gun on him again make a few Bah noises and he stops quartering away BOOM and I even heard what sounded like the bullet hit his chest, but once again he runs about 20 yards and stands there shaking his tail from side to side. Im thinking there must be something wrong with the gun because there is no way I could have missed him twice. Then he walks a few more yards and beds down so I say Okay he’s done . Then he gets up walk about 10 yards then beds down again so I say I better get another shot off before I can’t see him at all and start to reload again , when he gets up jumps across something and walks about another 30 yards and stops then I see a slight stagger and he beds down again in a bunch of trees and I knew it was over I waited about 15 minutes by now it was totally dark and walked over to where he laid down and he was done, Both shots hit him right where I aimed and the first shot went right thru. I never seen this happen before usually one shot with a Powerbelt and they go straight down.

Here are a few pics, I thought he was a 6 pointer by the size of his horns but turns out he is a 4 pointer. And my 2nd. Bonehead ever with the Muzzy.

CONGRATS on the muzzy buck
That's why QDMA should be removed, How can you tell what the buck is when it's almost dark, If they dropped the nuber of bucks you can take , it would do better than QDMA

Cool story,  I don't like powerbelts, I know that will sound crazy to most of you, too many stories like this one. I Like a bullet that expands more like xtp or knight red hot hollow point. SHOULDER BLADE for the solid bullets. You need something hard to smash a mushroom out of em.. Just my observations, to each his own.
