NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Small Game Action / Southern / Thinking of going for quail
Posted:  16 Nov 2006 11:47 AM
I think Tuesday I will venture down to Greenwood Forest WMA to try for some quail.  It will be my first time for quail and to that WMA.  I know it is big and I hope I don't get lost.  I think I will use my 20 gauge with #8 shot.

Good Luck!  Quail are DELICIOUS!!!    My favorite game bird.

It's a tough place to hunt if you don't have a dog. Good luck

I got the dog.  How are the crowds?  And the parking areas are on 539?

Ok, I'm not thinking of it.  I am going.  My grandparents live around the corner.  Looking for some pointers from some of the veterans.

Have fun and be careful. I love them little birds

Hey guys, be sure not to stray over onto Ft Dix (if you go on that side of Greenwood) as there is quite a bit of training going on there.  Hate to see an accident

20ga and #8.  Good quail combo.  Get the gun up quick and watch the bird.  Don't try to aim.
They are fun but quick.

Haven't hunted there in years, but if i don,t have to work I'll go. It is easy to get turned aroud there dirt roads, fields and hedge rows all lok alike. The place is laid out like a checker board.
Bring a comp [no swearing please] (GPS) especially if its overcast.

you walk like a 1\4 mile from where u drive in at. then u go down and u see a field thats bordering the path. either keep going straight or hang a right and go down. Last saturday most of the birds stayed close to the roads. Not many shots last weekend for the amount of birds and hunters out there. I ended up getting 1.

So the parking isn't right on 539, but off of it?  Is it easy to find?

You will be fine. It is a checkerboard of fields. Just hunt it methodically to keep your bearings. You will have company if you get turned around, ask for help.

be careful, they fly very low.  Have fun.

In the old days the old boys shot their own dogs if they didn't work correctly? That was rough and I had to witness it once at 10 yo. Maybe that's what wrong with me.

What about Rt. 72 coming in from? Thought about going down when it got cooler. Its to warm for me cause the chiggers and ticks.
