Does anyone hunt Hamburg Mountain here? I live across the street from it but have only hunted watershed property for the past 5 years. I'd just like to know if it would be worth my while to put some time into it... I've hiked the backside of the mountain a few times only to see a few bears..

Hamburg Mtn. isn't any different then the Watershed, other then the number of hunters using it, so you may see more deer being pushed around

I hunted it back in the early 1990's Before all the Wal-Mart Golf course BS cut into it. I camped therea few times during Winter Bow. I never got a buck there but I used to see a lot of deer and deer sign. I say give it a go and see what you think. I know I liked it

My wife's uncle drives it every year with a big group of guys.  They only seem to get a couple deer.

I know a couple of guys from Vernon who routinely kill big bucks on Hamburg mountain, it's big woods, they know the crossings, saddles and funnels, I don't believe you can effectivly drive deer in big woods, too many escape routes.

Lots of bears.  If you shoot a deer you better get on it quick or it is Yogi food.

It's a good place to hunt but it's tough going. Deer don't come easy. All the places that are easily accessbble are overpopulated with hunters. Everyplace else is a hump to get to.

These are the best spots.  Get in early and deep.

Hunted off Rt517 and Sand Pond Road.  Tough country but very nice and real backwoods deer terrain. Swamps and thickets are everywhere so best to go for some topos or aerials.  Always hear of some big deer so if you live nearby then it it a go!  Good luck.

Thanks guys... Really what I am trying to do is talk myself into buying a Zone 3 permit rather than a zone 2 permit. I don't know the land good up by me YET and was also thinking about hunting the Walkill River Refuge in Zone 2. That's another permit to buy on top of the Zone 2 permit. The problem with the watershed for me is if I put a bunch of time into it from now until the end of Novemeber and see somthing good, I can't hunt it in the winter. The season closes November 30th for bow... Then I am stuck with either Hamburg Mnt. or Wayawayanda

I’ve muzzleloader hunted this area hard for the past four years and haven’t scored yet. My pre-season scouting indicates that there are deer aplenty in the southern section, but also open water beaver swamps where waterfowl hunters congregate. This is my first year bow hunting this area and I had no idea how many October duck hunters were using it too! Now I know why all the deer disappear: As soon as the shooting starts in early October, their summer patterns change! I’m going to try the northern section where there is less open water and deeper woods. Maybe I can find where all the deer have gone?

Luck, Jeff.

I hunt hamburg mountain..it is tough but there are some monsters..I am still a novice but ..I break the big woods into little woods..meaning I hunt near swamps which act as funnels..also ridge tops prove very effective..Every year I have seen what I call a ghost..only see them once or twice and for the last 3 years it has been at just over 50 yards..my ghosts are 10 pointers with thick beams.PS last Nov 4th saw a 10 in 30-40 mile an hour wind but he was just to far. Also in hamburg mountain I saw 20 yards in front of me 2-- 10 pters fighting over a doe for 10 minutes(last time I scouted without my bow..lesson learned)Well I hope to see the ghost in the next 3 weeks. Also from my in season scouting the amount of rubs and scrapes is somewhat less than previous years at this time..I am thinking a late rut

Hey hows it going, I live on the mountain and I can say for certain that the deer here are few and far between as compared to other areas but then again I have not seen them as big in other zones. It's a good challenge and I think that makes it more worth while, plus the ecology of the mt is awesome, just saw a couple of milk snakes the other day and yeah bears everywhere!
Good luck hunting this season.

heres the plan go deep go thick right now. put up stand or bring climber in. bring sled now or deer cart now cover it with brush. now you go in easy just bow in hand and if you get one the sleds there or the cart easier way to get deer out. i learned hunting state land up north very few guys go far.when i go easy 2 miles thick shrub oaks everything is still there and its been 5 yrs

I live on the mountain too in Franklin, I agree the deer are not heavy in numbers but there are definetly some nice bucks up there. I just seen a beautiful high racked 8 pointer today on the way down the hill. Look for saddels and funnels.

hey bowhuntercop, do you need a special permit to hunt the watershed?

Yes  it's $30-$40 and not worth the money unless you turkey hunt.

I have had the permit for the last 2 years. I hunted it twice during 6 day last year on the zone 3 side and didn't even hear any shots.  Turkey hunting is decent. If you want to hunt New Years Day with a zone 3 or 6 muzzy permit or during winter bow or ice fish (fishing is a seperate permit)forget it. The permits expires after 12/31.
