Hunt tactics explained

As president of the United Bowhunters of New Jersey, I would like to respond briefly to Stuart Chaifetz's Aug. 29 commentary "Hunting isn't about the ecosystem, it's about killing animals."

Chaifetz, director of the Animal Protection Political Action Committee in Cherry Hill, wrote that he "discovered horrifying video footage of bowhunters shooting cage-raised pheasant on a New Jersey farm. The video of bowhunters, shown laughing as they kicked the docile birds and shot them at point-blank range, was so disgusting that the editors of the Asbury Park Press called it "barbaric' and that the hunters' actions "violate any civilized standard of behavior."'

Chaifetz "discovered" the video on the New Jersey Hunter Web site. In addition to his baseless accusations of cruelty, Chaifetz has accused UBNJ members of drugging the pheasant before shooting them. For the record, the birds were not drugged, nor were they abused prior to being harvested. The video showed hunters "flushing" the pheasant into flight, a common practice since no ethical hunter would shoot a bird on the ground. Since the hunters were using bows and arrows, the birds were shot at close range.

The commentary correctly notes that the pheasant were raised on a game farm specifically to be hunted, but fails to mention that UBNJ members paid for the release of an additional 35 pheasant in order to help revive New Jersey's dwindling pheasant population.

The Animal Protection PAC's opposition to hunting of any kind is a matter of record. While we can agree to disagree on that subject, Chaifetz would do well to stick to the facts and refrain from colorful hyperbole clearly geared to garner additional media attention.
