Stocked birds are basicly a put and take program you may get birds to hold for a day or two but they just become hawk and owl fodder

Hold over birds are rare, but I have seen them in the middle of summer on Black River & Flatbrook WMA's. I also have seen phesants at Skylands Manor SP during the summer months. These must have migrated from the NYS stocking at Sterling Forest SP.

There is also a small breeding population in the Meadowlands by the stadium. Must be from when they stocked there many many years ago.

if you go to any WMA youll find left over birds,,,but then again they stock a lot more than you will....most of them make friends with foxes mouths....now will u be putting them on state land or on private land.....also if youre using them for training only  get pigeons they have almost the same scent and are cheaper,,,most dog trainers start with them at first.....other thing is if yopu use it on state land those birds become state property as soon as they hit the ground and youre under  state laws

Wingshooter really made a good point ..... once the pheasant leaves your hand, it belongs to the state, and all wildlife laws pertain to it.

Years ago, some friends and I bought a remote bird thrower. It was good one, it would really throw a dead pheasant a far way ---- both vertically and downfield. It was expensive, but well worth it if you don't have a field naturally filled with birds.

MP, my club stocks our own birds and I am usually part of the stocking , we usually shoot them up right away but the ones that get away we sometimes see up to a week later roaming the road or the property, don't forget pen raised birds have NO survival instinct, so any predators will get a free meal

That is pretty much what I thought, that they didn't last long.  Just hoping someone had success.  I also knew about as soon as they are released they become state property.

Actually I don't think you are allowed to stock birds on state WMA's.

You can put birds out on private property and they do become property of the state.

You are allowed to release pheasants on WMA's for dog training and, of course, they belong to the state as soon as it leaves your hand.

I only know because I wrote the DFW with that question, and they sent me a copy of the law

They told me I can release any game bird.  However only in Dog Training Areas during the off season and any WMA during the season.  All game laws apply.
