| Hey guys, all you waterfowlers out there, when do you start scouting for the season? I'm in a relatively new area to me and have been checking some places out with some decent success (i.e. birds) and I'm wondering when I can start to get an accurate reading of the consistency of the birds there. I know summer is just starting but I'm so ansy for the season to start I wanna get out and do something. Any info appreciated! Thanks!!! | ||

Locate spots to hunt first. Then worry about the birds come Sept.. It comes down to water levels & when fields are cut if the birds will be there. Take last year most every place was washed out from the floods. We had to move to flooded fields & timber for ducks first season.
1st day water was at least 2 to 3' higher then normal. nobody could scout for that LOL |

Scouting doesn't always mean fowl in the area, you also have to look at conditions for hi tide and low tide (how will your boat handle the conditions) type of area, what will hold the type of fowl in the area, if you didn't scout areas in the season lasst year its hard to know where the fowl will be this year, look for places you can hunt safely and things ducks or geese will like in the area( food sources ).
Its easy to adjust during the season, for ducks, hard to adjust if your boat can't handle the tides or area |

I pretty much set up for goose and mallards. Gonna grab some more decoys this year and hopefully have some better luck.

I hunt swamps/beaver flows, open water & land. Most all the ducks we take are puddle ducks.

| I hunt the Delaware bay and I always try to do some scoutin when I go fishing in the summer. Mostly I try to see what has changed in meadow mostly due to the snow geese eat outs and what has silted in. I start lookin for ducks in early Oct when it cools down a bit and the bugs settle down. For geese I sometimes try to find fields and secure premission before the season starts. | ||
