NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Waterfowl / Canadian Geese Banding
Posted:  21 Jun 2006 11:01 PM
On Fri. afternoon, I will be assisting the State in a Goose tagging program on Cooper River, in Camden Co. We do this every year. We will catch anywhere from 50 - 250 birds. They will be leg banded and released. Those that are already banded, will have their info recorded, then be released.
At this time of year, the geese are molted out, which limits their flying ability. They are herded onto the embankments with Kayaks, where they are contained in pens until they are banded.
It's a "REAL" fun job The will bite you, scratch you, and poop (edited) all over you. And it NEVER washes out of your clothes.
Two years ago, 2 of our geese were recovered above the Artic Circle.
Here's a few shots from last year. Note ** The geese are not harmed in any way by this procedure, except their pride, when they are checked for their "sex"

In the pen

Is it a he or she ??

Recording the info on a previously banded bird, prior to it's release.

We have alot of volunteers that assist us.

Most of these are resident Geese, not commuters
They never leave.
I hear Corsine is trying to tax them for living here.
If he does, then they will leave like the rest of us

we call em "sky carp".  fun to catch, the end.

i've heard that, for some reason, the geese out west are better eating.  i'm friends with a guy that grew up in california and he said the geese out there were great eating.  when he moved to nj he got his first couple of geese.  he cooked one up and took a bite.  he burried the carc [no swearing please] in his yard....

my .02 cents.
Early season geese are crap! NOTHING but chem lawn feeedersLOL
second season & late season they have been feeding on corm & non toxic foods. Those are the ones that taste good

i agree with that Bob - killed my first goose ever last september and it tasted like tire rubber. killed a few more in the winter and they were money.

Maybe someone could find a way to grind and refine them into OIL & GAS so we could rule the world.

Thanks for the info...so I take it late season winter geese are what I should try if I ever have the opportunity.
Makes sense...you are what you eat...thanks

The best way I have found to cook them is:
1) Grill chunks of goose breast which is wrapped in bacon.
2) In a stew.  Cube up breast meat and add in vegetables and enough cream of celery/mushroom soup to cover.  Simmer until everything is cooked.

The best way to get rid of them is to sneak up on them and roll a grenage in the middle of them...KABOOM!  BYE BYE BIRDIES!
