Has anyone ever donated a deer in NJ?  I am curious how this works??

Is there a cost?  Where do you have to have the deer butchered before donating?

I think you drop the deer & $25 off or something.

I donated a doe last year.  You have to use a participating butcher and drop off the whole deer.  I think I donated $40 for the program.  I kept the receipt for tax purposes.

I think we as a group should try to designate one get together and the deer we get should be donated.

Funding for it last year ran out. Toward the end of the season Newton High school was not accepting donated deer. You are supposed to donate $40 along with the deer. The guy at Newton HS has waived that fee for me in the past. Maybe that's part of the reason they ran out of funds early.

The problem with it besides funding is that there are very few participating butchers. In the northern part of the state Newton HS is the only one. The next closest place for hunters in Sussex, Morris, Warren, Passaic counties is all the way down on RT 22 in Whitehouse Station.

Not enough butchers, and you are expected to donate
$40.00. Or more. I was asked last winter after getting the deer to the Butcher "befor I close" almost killing myself and my friend, "so that's it for you on the donation then". Very bad taste

Last year I donted a doe and the donation was $25. They lost their funding from the state so everything has been privately donated.  Also because of the lack of funding they had to start charging people.  As everyone said funding ran out.  I think it is a great program and I wish we could do something on here to help out.
