Does anyone else out there hunt woodchucks?
I've found it to be a great way to practice for deer season. They are plentiful pests that most farmers welcome hunters onto their land to eliminate. And a hunter that trims a landowner's woodchuck problem, and shows he's a " safe " hunter can find his foot firmly in the door when asking permission to return for deer season

I've been using a Re. Model 7 in .223cal. I shoot it all summer for chucks, then when Pa. deer season come around, I grab my Rem. Model 7 in 7MM-08. Same gun/ scope combination. It's just like practicing all summer with your deer rifle.
For the longer shots, I have an TC Encore in 22-250, with a 14X scope. But it tends to rattle the windows on the smaller farms

The picture I posted in the photo gallery shows my old ( it was Dad's ) Rem. model 788 in .22-250. Since it was made in 1968 ( I believe ) and has sentimental value, I don't shoot it anymore. But it was accurate enough to get the other chuck in the photo at 300+yds, from my deck

Really?  Then there must be something wrong with my pellet rifle then.  I've shot squirrels with my pellet rifle only to have the BB bounce off them.

Nightstalker, I hunt hogs as well. I hunt farms all over Northern Jersey and I use a worked Remington 243 BDL. I also use a 22mag for the close quarters shots. It really is a lot of fun. The long range shots are the most challenging(500 yards). As soon as we get a break from the rain the farmers will begin cutting the fields. Then the fun begins!

My father has been after them with his Ruger no.1 in 220 swift. Killed 34 in the last month.
Posted:  17 Dec 2008 10:49 PM
i nailed 2 of them,1 with my 12 gauge #8 lr/ln target load, the other with my nylon 77 .22 lr. last time i saw on any my land was 5 months ago.

i know there's more of them around here, cause the last time i seen any their was 4 at once munching on grass together.    can't use rifle unless on private land. public land is shotgun only,3 shells, no larger than #4 fine shot.

they are in the dens now till around feb march.  I am thinking of going to the 204 for both hogs and out of state preds.  17 centers are good also for jersey.  22 rims will not always drop them in their tracks if they are by the den may get back down in there, that sucks for me because I need the glands.

If you guys shooting hogs want to save glands pm me.

this is very true. i find that if i keep the shots within 80 yards using a heavy subsonic round, headshot, i can 9 times outta 10 drop them in their tracks.

here's what i use:

which results in this:

OR... this:

which results in something like this: (i wish)

Same here, used to have a farm in PA to do it but no more. You all may think this is crazy but I used my hunting rifle,a 270 weatherby mag. Figured I'd use the same gun I hunted whitetails with. The 100gr bullet at 3800ft/sec vaporized them, nothing left but scraps and blood.I'd love to do it again
Posted:  18 Dec 2008 6:03 PM
I can't use that one!

I use the glands to make lure for ground hog control

I am going to switch over to varmit gernades bullets in my 243 at 60 grains  till I can get a 204

We shoot 150 to 200 of them in  a year. Great practice, alot of fun and the farmers are happy.

I've found it to be a great way to practice for deer season??

I can't see how huntng dumb chucks can compare to
deer.

really?

you get to take a lot more shots in a day of hunting hogs than you might get all deer season.  no matter if you're shooting a .204 or a .30-06, you go through the same steps in controlling your breathing and settling the cross hairs. if you've spent all summer shooting hogs, that will directly impact your accuracy come rifle season.
